No matter where you are in your career, everyone remembers the daunting and nerve-wracking first day of a job. For myself, my first day into the big world of work was quite recent.

Although my first day was as daunting as ever, it was surprisingly a breeze. I will give some of the credit for my smooth transition to wattsnext. However, there were also a number of steps that I took that led me to an easy breezy first day.

So, grab a pen and paper while I dish out all my hints for an easy first day….

In order to make the most out of the day you need to get prepared. Whether it’s waking up and hour early or pre-making your lunches the night before.

You can never be too prepared! !

Starting a new job is nerve-wracking. You don’t know anyone’s name, how to work the phones or computers……you don’t even know where the bloody LOO is! However, the best thing to do is to walk in on your first day with your head held high. Remember they hired you for a reason. They believe that you are good enough!

  1. CLEAN UP– and I’m not talking about your house or car!

How you present yourself online can really make or break job opportunities. So, before you even start the job hunt make sure you tidy up your LinkedIn and Facebook. Making sure all privacy settings are active. As well as your online appearance, make sure your physical appearance is clean too. Buy yourself a brand-new outfit. If you look good, you will feel good (this will help for tip number 2 in increasing confidence).

For most of us we were probably earning pretty crappy money throughout uni. Whether we were check-out chicks at drive-throughs or mowing lawns or babysitting for some extra cash. It’s safe to say that our first pay check may get our hearts pumping and our legs running – running straight to the shops! Don’t get me wrong, you definitely should treat yourself (when its deserved), but also create a budget so that you’re not left eating 2-minute noodles one week out from pay day.

If you have lasted this long without this money, you should try to continue.

Your first day doesn’t have to be scary and daunting. Plan and prepare and dive right into the new world of fulltime work, who knows maybe you might even enjoy yourself!
