Everyone’s declaring meetings dead these days. “Async everything!” “Email is enough!” “Just Slack me!”

I’m going against the grain here: I love meetings.

But I’m a real snob about them.

• Mistaking efficiency for effectiveness (they’re not the same thing)

watts really happening: We’ve developed meeting PTSD from years of bad ones, so we’re rejecting the entire concept.

But here’s what’s getting lost: The right meetings, done well, are magic.

Real-time problem solving. Energy that builds on itself. Ideas that spark other ideas. Decisions that actually stick because everyone was in the room when they happened.

You can’t replicate that in an email chain or a Slack thread, no matter how many fire emojis you use.

watts working: Meeting enthusiasts with actual standards are:

• Treating meetings like performances—they rehearse, they have a script, they nail the ending
• Inviting only people who can actually contribute (not just people who might be interested)
• Starting with energy and ending with clarity, never the reverse
• Protecting meeting time like it’s their most valuable resource (because it is)

watts the real game changer: Stop having bad meetings and calling all meetings bad.

Start having fewer, better meetings and watch what becomes possible.

Because the problem was never meetings.

The problem was meetings without purpose, structure, or respect for everyone’s time.
