The real reason your team can't run things without you
“My leadership team just isn’t ready to run things without me.”
I hear this from every founder planning their exit. And they’re right. Their leadership team ISN’T ready.
But here’s the part that’s going to sting: They’re not ready because you made sure they’d never be.
watts not working: Using that one time they failed as proof they can’t lead.
Remember when you let them run that project/event/quarter and it went sideways? Of course you do. You probably replay it in your head constantly.
“See? This is why I can’t leave.” (You think it, even if you don’t say it.)
But here’s what you did after that failure: You jumped back in, fixed everything, and took control again.
Here’s what you didn’t do: Ask yourself what knowledge, skill, or experience gap caused the failure. Then teach them exactly that.
watts really happening: You’ve created executive-level order takers, not leaders.
Every time they brought you a decision, you made it for them. Every time they failed, you rescued them instead of teaching them. Every time they suggested strategy, you explained why yours was better.
That failure you keep thinking about? That was your teaching moment. Instead, you made it your excuse that they need you and you can’t exit.
And here’s the kicker: You keep waiting for them to act like entrepreneurs. They’re not entrepreneurs. They never will be. That’s WHY THEY WORK FOR YOU.
watts working: Founders who successfully exit do three things you haven’t:
- They develop through failure. When something breaks, they don’t just fix it. They teach the WHY behind the fix. The thinking that would have prevented it. The framework for next time.
- They communicate obsessively. Not just “this failed” but “here’s what you didn’t know to look for.” The patterns. The early warning signs. The context they were missing.
- They understand motivation. Your head of ops doesn’t want to build an empire. They want stability and process. Stop expecting them to want what you want.
watts the real game changer: Every time your team fails, you have two choices:
- Use it as evidence they need you (and stay trapped forever)
- Use it as data about what to teach them (and get free)
That disaster you keep replaying in your mind? It’s not proof they can’t lead. It’s proof of what you haven’t taught them.
Your leadership team is exactly as capable as you’ve developed them to be. And every failure you fixed instead of teaching through kept them exactly where they are.
Have a week of teaching, not rescuing!
